Research Into Existing Music Channels

MTV: MTV Base, MTV Rocks, MTV Dance & MTV Classic

MTV (Music Television) was the first television channel to broadcast music videos, launching in 1981. With the first music video it ever aired being The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star. Due to MTV coming about it allowed music videos to be broadcasted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By making music videos so much more freely available towards the consumers it became a major success worldwide. Therefore allowing MTV to begin to grow and expand, by doing so it introduced more channels specifically dedicated towards certain genres. Examples of these include MTV Rocks (Rock genre specific), MTV Base (R&B genre specific), MTV Dance (Dance genre specific) and MTV Classic (Video’s from the past). Due to MTV’S plethora of subsidy music channels that are able to specialise in each major genre MTV is able to showcase all major artists from each different genre through their range of channels.

KISS

Beginning back as a small pirate radio station in 1985 Kiss branched out into the music television channel market aspect in 1993 after gaining major success and picking up sponsorship from brands such as Levi’s and Sony. After jumping into the music television world Kiss began to succeed in that area too as they managed to get a cult status recognised by their style of dance music coverage. The style of music in which Kiss initially cover is mainstream hip hop, R&B and dance. The types of artists in which you would usually see peaking on Kiss’s channel would be the likes of Drake, The Weeknd and Iggy Azalea

Kerrang

Kerrang TV came about in 2001 with the aim to provide punk and metal music video playlists as no other channels at that time offered a similar service for those genres of music. Due to that it became major success with the fans of the metal and punk genres as they could have the opportunity to text in their requests and have their favourite music videos broadcasted on the channel. Additionally another feature of Kerrang TV is their rock 100 countdown that occurs once every year to showcase the 100 most requested videos on the station over the past year. Artists on Kerrang that are heavily featured include those such as Green Day, You Me At Six and Paramore.

4Music

4music was established in 2008 with the intentions to provide audiences with the latest current chart music mainly within the pop genre of music, therefore typical featured artists would include Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. It also provides coverage of music festivals such as T4 on the beach and V-Festival as well as music videos being provided on a 24/7 basis. However as of 2010 4music began to broadcast television shows blended in with their music chart shows such as A-List playlist and the UK music video chart.

Conclusion

In my opinion I think that the most suitable music channel to put our music video onto would be MTV Rocks. This is due to the fact that MTV Rocks showcases Alternative, therefore fitting in with our music video as it matches the same genre. Furthermore by using this channel to display our music video I feel that our target audience will be reached a lot easier in comparison to any other music channels due to the fact that our target audience within the alternative rock genre would be watching this channel to see all the new and hot alternative rock songs currently peaking in the charts.
