Font/Masthead Typography Analysis
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type, it is important considering the fact that the choice of type face used can affect how a piece is understood, therefore meaning that the style of type used within a magazine should be easily relatable towards the genre of the magazine. In addition to that when analysing different fonts you have to also consider the features in which define the fonts, for example type, size, pitch and spacing.
Masthead Typography Analysis
For example upon this cover of XXL magazine the font used is called Gills Sans Ultra, a bold font presented in capital letters in order to let it easily stand out. Also by presenting the font of the masthead in white with a red box surrounding it allows the XXL to stand out even more as the box has been sent to the back. Therefore giving it more of a loud and attractive look, appealing to the audience.
Another example would be the typography upon this cover of Billboard magazine, the font used is known as geometric sans, a font that allows the masthead have a stark and simple shape making it perfectly fit in with the style of the magazine, however it is also specifically customized to Billboard magazine’s style. For example by filling in the rounded letters in the masthead with bright colours it provides a different and exclusive style of font to other magazines.
Font Analysis
To start off with my first font that I have looked into it is a bold Bebas Neue font that could be used for features such as the masthead and main story. I feel that it would be very suitable for my magazine due to the fact that it follows the same style of the Gills Sans Ultra font used by XXL magazine. However I feel that it looks cleaner in comparison to the Gills Sans Ultra font which will look a lot better to my target audience.
The next font that I looked at was a sleek and clean Geo Sans Light font, this style of font would be ideal for features such as the cover lines and text for my double page spread. In my opinion I feel that it would contrast well with a bold font and allow my magazine to have a clean look to it. Furthermore I think that this font that would be well suited towards my magazine as it would really contribute towards that hip hop house style in which I want to create for my audience.
