Evaluation Question 4
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
On a general scale my hip hop music magazine will be able appeal and relate to all hip hop fans. However there is a specific branch of hip hop music fans in which I aim my magazine at. That being the younger aged (16-24), fashion aware and skateboarding youth tribe in which look to hip hop music as an escape from society. I wanted my magazine to be aimed at this audience because I feel that most other current hip hop magazines do not really gear themselves up towards the youth and rather towards the older hip hop fans.
In addition to this I wanted to aim my magazine to a younger audience of hip hop fans due to the fact that I feel that I could be more relatable with the content supplied within my magazine. That being more of a demand for featuring underground hip hop artists and the latest styles as that is what the younger hip hop fans would favour the most. Furthermore I specifically stated the age range 16-24 due to the fact that an audience being aged from 16 years old onwards would be more interested in a clean and simple layout that just does the job in comparison to a layout that is cluttered with tacky colours, fonts and stickers.
To gain this understanding for my hip hop magazine I conducted primary and secondary research. The primary research that I conducted involved creating a survey with ten questions that was then given out to other year 12’s around my school, the data that had accumulated from these surveys were placed into pie charts and individually analysed. Furthermore I conducted a number of interviews with my questions and recorded them to also gain more of an understanding towards what my audience wanted in my magazine.
From both of these forms of primary research I managed to understand that the hip hop genre of music was the most favoured out of all the people that I surveyed and interviewed. Furthermore from analysing my data I could see that my audience would mainly like to see features such as interviews and live music coverage within my magazine.
Next up was my secondary research in which was conducted from looking into my target audience’s social tribe. To do this I went onto the UK Tribes website to gain an understanding of the numerous categories that group social tribes and cultures together within the youth of today. From doing so I managed to understand that the typical tribe that would be interested in my hip hop magazine would be the alternative tribe. This is due to the fact that the alternative tribe is category which contains tribes such as skateboarders and super fans. This is backed up by the fact that the hip hop culture crosses over with many other cultures, one of them being skateboarding. This therefore means that from my research upon the UK Tribes website the alternative tribe would be the most suitable audience for my media product.
In addition to that form of secondary research a video was also composed of what my target audience will typically be like as a person. To do this I had to research the typical things that my audience would do with their lives. Examples of this would include where they shop, how much they listen to music and their use of the social media. By conducting this it allowed me to show a greater understanding of my audience for my hip hop magazine personally. Furthermore it also allowed me to gain more of an understanding towards what sort of content should be included within my hip hop magazine. By gathering secondary research it allowed me to reinforce what my target audience was like and what they wanted by comparing it with my primary research.
