Evaluation Question 2

2)How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups due to the fact that on a general scale only particular social groups are interested into the hip hop genre of music with the odd exception. However the main social groups that are interested in hip hop music are the ones in which I have aimed to represent within my hip hop magazine.

Therefore with the particular social groups being skaters, hype beasts and the urban youth culture I need to involve content within my magazine that they can relate to. Therefore by involving features within my magazine of the artists they would listen to, the shows they would go to and the fashion that they would wear I would be able to represent those social groups.

I have done this buy including a range of the most recognised and favourable rap artists today and provided interviews with them too. In addition to that I have features dedicated to live coverage at venues such as the Boiler Room which is respected venue by the urban youth culture. Furthermore I have dedicated a feature to the street wear fashion in which they hype beasts would take a keen interest too. Also by dressing my artists in a streetwear style with brands such as supreme, palace, APC and Carhartt it allows all of my particular social groups to be represented as they can be able to relate with the style of that fashion.

The split picture above shows two different images, one that is taken from my magazine which is on the left and another taken from CLASH magazine on the right. Now looking at the two it can be noticed that they are similarities and differences in terms of how both of the photographs are constructed.

For example A$AP Rocky’s facial expression and posture are shown to be very serious and meaningful, making A$AP Rocky seem as if he is in deep thought. Now when referring to my photo of Yung Preme taken from my magazine it demonstrates a similar serious facial expression with a meaningful posture that also portrays his serious emotions. This represents the urban youth culture due to the fact that being young typically means that you are always dealing with a mixture of emotions. Therefore both of these photos can represent the urban youth culture as the artists themselves are demonstrating their deep emotions that they are going through by revealing them through their own facial expression and posture.

Furthermore the costume in which Yung Preme is wearing follows a similar style towards what A$AP Rocky is wearing. For example they are both wearing Supreme and have the overall skate/street wear style look. This allows my magazine to represent particular social groups due to the fact that it relates to the same style of fashion in which they wear. Additionally with hip hop fans considering fashion as key aspect of their lives it was something ideal to focus upon with my hip hop magazine.

However a differentiation between the two photographs in the way in which they are constructed are the way in which they shot at different angles. For example my photo of Yung Preme is taken at a straight angle whilst CLASH magazines photo of A$AP Rocky is taken at more of a lower side angle. The differentiation between them is that the low angle shot demonstrates A$AP Rocky as being a powerful figure in which he should as he is a well-known rapper. Whilst Yung Preme is shot at a straight angle, this demonstrates him to be shown at real world angle that demonstrates what he would look like at real life view. This was specifically done due to the fact that I wanted Yung Preme to be portrayed as a rapper new to world that has to prove himself.
