MAGAZINE FRONT PAGE ANALYSIS 2

Masthead: The masthead on this front cover of The Source magazine is presented with a red title in a bold font. This therefore attracts a lot of attention when first looked at as the bright red colour used for the font of the masthead allows it to stand out from the white background used. By doing this it allows the masthead to easily stand out as the two colours contrast well between on another. In addition to that another convention to be analysed is the actual name of the magazine. The Source is an interesting title as it suggests that the magazine is the key place to find the most important and latest information within the hip hop world.

Main Story: Being the main story within the front page it has to stick out the most in comparison to the others, therefore by the style of font being very large, bold and brightly coloured it does just that. This is shown because the way that each word in the main story gets bigger demonstrates that the heading is the most important within the front page.

Secondary Story: The secondary story upon the front page follows the same theme of the main story with the text gradually changing shape, however it gets smaller rather than bigger. Therefore demonstrating that it is less important than the main story but it still shows itself as a key article within the magazine as it is also positioned below the main story.

Background: By using white for the background of the magazine it portrays that the magazine is supplying a positive vibe with no negative detail. In addition to this even though white is a plain shade it contrasts really well with the red and black font throughout the whole page, therefore allowing the font to stand out.

Cover Lines: The cover lines on the front cover are quite basic as most of them only involve two words, however they are short and snappy and easily entice the reader. This is good because these cover lines still manage to do the job of revealing the content within the magazine while looking clean and minimal.

Fonts: The font used is a bold and blocky Arial style font coloured in a bright red, the style of font is also quite sharp and modern which works well with the rest of the theme of the magazine as it represents that the magazine manages to give the latest information.

Colours: Within the front page red is used for the main things which are most important such as the masthead, main story, secondary story and important up and coming events. Black is used for the banner located above the masthead and secondary up and coming events. With white appearing as the background and for some detail on the masthead and 25th anniversary sticker.

Layout: The layout of this magazine includes the font being placed around the edge acting as a border. This therefore shows the front cover to look quite organised as everything is placed in the same way and not just spread about everywhere. This is because to match that hip hop house style that is noticed with all hip hop magazines having all of the font organised suits the best.
