House Style Summary

House Style

If summarising house style it is considered to be the use of a similar layout and structure for a magazine. For example the elements such as the masthead, font, cover lines, images and stories are specifically placed within the magazine pages to give it an individual look.

With my magazine following the hip hop music genre I need to make sure that my magazine can follow that usual hip hop house style, therefore looking into other house styles of existing hip hop magazines will help give inspiration for what mine will look like, hopefully giving that immediate feel towards the audience that my magazine is a serious hip hop one. In addition to that if I know that I am very content with my layout and can be easily able to continuously use it for additional issues I will have the knowledge that the audience will easily notice my magazine due to it being familiar every issue.

House Style Analysis: XXL

The images above are the front page and double page spread from an edition of XXL magazine. It mainly focuses upon the rapper Waka Flocka Flame as he is the main image upon the front cover. In addition to that the main story which is in reference to Waka Flocka Flame is coloured in a bright green font. This green font used for Waka Flocka Flames main story as it is also carried throughout his double page spread as it is used for the title, drops cap and pull quote. This allows for a hip hop house style to be created due to the fact that it keeps a similar set colour scheme related to that main artist throughout their contribution to the magazine. Therefore allowing them to stand out amongst the other interviews within the magazine. Furthermore the layout follows that general hip hop house style as its cover lines are neatly placed around the featuring artists with the main story overlapping the main image. This specific layout easily allows the audience to be navigated around the front cover.

House Style Analysis: HIP HOP CONNECTION

This issue of HIP HOP CONNECTION solely focuses on artists Dizzee Rascal and EL-P as they grace the main image on the front cover. The typical hip hop magazine house style is demonstrated with the clean layout as the cover lines are placed tidily on the right hand side of the front cover with the main tag line overlapping the main image. However the typical house style of a hip hop magazine is also challenged as the black and yellow colour scheme demonstrated upon the front cover is not continued through the artist’s double page spread. However it is replaced with a black and white colour scheme instead.
