Double Page Analysis 1

Magazine: Q
Main Image: The main image upon this double page spread presents a medium shot of Jay-Z looking directly into the camera with a very serious facial expression. Due to this serious facial expression given off by Jay-Z it could demonstrate that he is providing personal information within the article. In addition to that Jay-Z is completely dressed in black clothing as it matches his notorious saying of “all black everything”. Also the main image is divided by shades of red white, this is key within the image as the red demonstrates anger and danger, whilst the white suggests purity and innocence. The use of colours establishes that Jay-Z is revealing a more dangerous and scarier side of himself which can be known from his unfavourable past, but also a new pure and developed persona which looks towards a peaceful future.
Quote: The quote within the article demonstrates a breakdown of social stereotypes due to the fact that involves Jay-Z taking in inspirational words from Noel Gallagher, this is shown due to the fact that it shows that Jay-Z can relate with other musical cultures. Furthermore the quote is presented on the white side of the main image in bold red font which allows it to stand out from the background, therefore easily allowing it to get the reader’s attention.
Text: The main text throughout the article is fairly basic as black Arial font is used with some accents of red used for things such as the quote and the large initial located on the right page.
Colour Scheme: The main colour scheme for this double page spread is largely red and white with a bit of black shown used for the text and main image. The use of red within the magazine demonstrates danger and passion which could represent Jay-Z’s darker side and his passion towards music. This is presented well in the colour scheme as some accents of red used in places such as the large initial on the right page allows it to empower the white background. However the purity and innocence demonstrated by the white is still noticeable as it flows well with the red.
Layout: The layout of the double page spread is simple but organised, this is shown from the positioning of the main elements such as the main image and whole story which are neatly placed next each other divided by each page. Following that other elements such as the masthead and quote are tidily placed in the top centre and bottom corner of the page. By positioning these elements there it allows the reader to be easily navigated around the article.
Headline: The headline of this double page spread is quite interesting as it involves a small red title backed up with a much larger single letter which causes the whole headline to stand out.
